I am due for a new timing belt (right at 60,000).

A lot of people have told me that I SHOULD get a new one immediately because if I dont, the timing will screw up and the engine will need major repairs (valves/pistons) on top of needing a new timing belt.

Others have said just wait until it wears out and it will do nothing to the engine if it breaks, I'll just have to get a new one right then.

I can't really afford paying the $400 for a timing belt, but is it really necessary?

I think this engine is non-interference so if the belt breaks I don't think you are screwed. Either way I would imagine you want to get it done soon. $400 for a timing belt job is pretty reasonable. Is that a dealer price?

yep, the service guy said it will be $410 and he also suggested getting a new water pump since they have to take it out anyways and charge you labor for it

Sure the 4G94 is non-interference? Timing belt isn't something I'd wait for to wear out. I know the 4G69 is an interference engine. If the 4G94 is, as well, you'd be screwed if the belt broke.

Get it replaced ASAP. My first car was a '84 Honda Prelude and I broke the timing belt twice withing 16 months. Bad seals. Both times it broke I was fortunate enough to just be idling, so the car just died. Had I been driving at say highway speeds, bye bye engine. Each install cost $500+. I sold that POS as soon as I could after the second break :?

I won't mislead you but Showcase Mitsubishi would do a great job and there has never been any complaints from there...although closer would be better for you.
